Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews believes that adaptation to the conditions of English as quickly as possible will be the biggest challenge of his team on its upcoming tour of England and Ireland. Sri Lanka will start their campaign with two ODIs against Ireland in Dublin before moving to England for a Twenty20 international at one time, five ODIs and two tests.
“As a player the most important is to adapt to the conditions,” Mathews said. “We’ve been playing a lot of cricket in the subcontinent and play in England will be a great challenge for us all , especially to suit conditions early. Early summer , conditions can be wet and the ball seam and swing a little. If we can adapt to conditions as soon as possible and play our brand of cricket we can beat any team .
“Playing against Ireland will be good for us. ‘re A very good team and we can not be complacent against them. Know their conditions well and adapt to their conditions be our biggest challenge . Whatever the team that plays there knows that Ireland is very good at home . expect a good challenge for them and I’m sure you guys are ready for it . ”
Mathews also said he expects England to come hard on his team after a disappointing Ashes campaign in Australia , where they were defeated 5-0 . Even history is against Sri Lanka , which has not won a Test in England since 2006 , when they came out victorious Nottingham Test by 134 runs to tie the three-match series , 1-1. The team last toured England for a Test series in 2011, when the batting collapse in the second innings of the first Test in Cardiff gave the hosts a 1-0 win .
” England are very difficult team to beat at home ,” he said . ” They know their conditions and play their best cricket at home. ‘s Going to be a big challenge for all of us and we’re looking forward to it . ”
For Mathews who has been on three previous tours to England, but only played in ODIs , this is his first trip to the country. Sri Lanka will play Tests in the Lord and in Leeds. Sri Lanka have not won a bilateral ODI series outside the subcontinent since November 2010 , when they beat Australia in February – 1.On be touring England in 2011 , they lost the five-match ODI series 2-3.
“Playing in the Lord will be a special moment for me and the team. If we can win the series it will be a great effort from the whole team ,” he said . “But we’re not looking too far, but take one game at a time. We’re playing against Ireland and then hoping to take that momentum to the series of England and try to win against them in the ODIs and tests . ”
Mathews has been captain of Sri Lanka for seven tests and the additional responsibility only brought the best of his batting . The average of 80 in tests , including three fifty-one personal best of 157 not out. In ODIs also has an impressive record as captain , scoring 794 runs at 44.11 in 32 matches with an unemployment rate of 83 . Mathews , however , only credited his teammates for his good form .
” I’m slowly getting comfortable because the team is responding very well . They are giving me your 100 percent and are like family . We help each other and we enjoy the success of others . That’s the main thing.
“It’s a team effort and makes us very well in the recent past. Speak with all the senior guys and get their advice , but I do it in my own style with the help of many people .
Winning the Cup Asia was a key moment as captain Mathews , particularly due to the burden of expectations thrust on the shoulders of Sri Lanka. Before his win T20 world in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka finished runners-up in four of the last six world events.
“It was one of the highlights of my career. That’s a big trophy I won with the help of the team,” Mathews said. “We have very close in the past but have not won a major title before the Asian Cup . I am very happy with the way we went about it. Winning the T20 World Cup was also a great achievement for the whole team. ”
To help achieve its goals Mathews , has a new vice – captain, a new coach as well as a special consultant . Lahiru Thirimanne has assumed the role of Deputy Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal Marvan Atapattu has filled the vacuum created by coach Paul Farbrace , who returned to England. , Former Surrey coach Chris Adams has been appointed to act as a consultant for the tour.
” Thiri is a great player and has shown that in the past. He is one of those players who does not have the opportunity to bat in a permanent position for a long time and he has hit in several positions. Whether you take your record that has marked almost all positions. This shows the player’s character . he is a kind of very cool head and calm. I’m looking forward to him being my assistant and taking the team to greater heights .
” Marvan has played enough cricket and captained the country so often . He has enough coaching experience . He was our hitting coach and is now appearing as a head coach . He shared his experience over and has been great. I’m pretty sure he will do a good job. players it comes to responding to the challenge .
” We also hope to make the most of Chris Adams. Thinking behind getting that he was aware of the conditions of English and the English team too. ‘ve Done some analysis of the English team . We’re lucky to know their players but it’s more about the conditions and how we use it correctly. That was the main thought behind it has appointed.
