The prize for the poetry category was given for ” distinguished volume of original verse” by an American writer.
A Columbia University alum , Mr. Seshadri receive USD 10,000 reward.
According to the biography of Mr. Seshadri on the Pulitzer website , currently teaches poetry and nonfiction writing in the liberal arts college Sarah Lawrence in New York. Born in Bangalore in 1954 , Mr. Seshadri came to America at age five and grew up in Columbus, Ohio.
His books of poems include James Laughlin winner The Long Meadow and Wild Kingdom ( 1996) Award . His poems , essays and reviews have appeared in prestigious publications such as the American Scholar, the Nation, the New Yorker, the Paris Review, Yale Review, the Times Book Review, the Philadelphia Enquirer and in many anthologies, including under 35 years : the New Generation of American Poets and the Best American Poetry 1997 and 2003.
Mr. Seshadri has received grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts , and has been awarded Bernard F Conners Long Poem Prize Paris Review and the MacDowell Colony Fellowship for Distinguished Poetic Achievement .
Mr. Seshadri is the fifth person of Indian origin to bag the prestigious award, the first of which Gobind Behari Lal in 1937. Mr. Lal , an editor of science, was awarded the Pulitzer in the category for its coverage reports of science in the tercentenary of Harvard University while working for the universal service . He died of cancer in 1992 .
Indian -American author Jhumpa Lahiri won Pulitzer for fiction in 2000 for his short story collection ” The interpreters of diseases.”
Journalist and writer of Indian origin Geeta Anand was the next to get the prize . Ms. Anand was the investigative reporter and columnist for the Wall Street Journal and won the award in 2003 for ” clear, concise and comprehensive stories that illuminated the roots, the importance and impact of corporate scandals in America.”
Book acclaimed Indian – American physician Siddhartha Mukherjee on cancer, ‘ The Emperor of all diseases : A Biography of Cancer, “won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in the category of non – fiction in general.

Srinagar : Two policemen were killed on Sunday when militants opened fire on the house of a youth leader in the power of the National Conference in Pulwama , the first terrorist attack directed electoral activities in Jammu and Kashmir this year.
Both attackers were later killed by the security forces . Shohda ( martyrs ) Brigade believed to be a shadow outfit of the militant group Lashkar -e- Taiba , claimed responsibility for the attack.
The militants opened fire on the residence Masoodi Yawar , who is organizing the youth wing of the National Congress in South Kashmir in Khrew in Pulwama , 35 km from Srinagar, this afternoon , police said .
Two policemen – Police Chief Abdul Hamid and Constable Vinod Kumar – posted on guard were wounded in the attack. They were taken to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The attack took place when Mr. Masoodi held a party meeting at his residence , a spokesman for the National Conference , he said.
Security forces pursued the militants and occupied the neighboring fields , police said adding a militant was killed .
The other militant involved in the attack was holding up last reports arrived , police said .
This is the first militant attack focus on election- related activity in Kashmir since the timing of Lok Sabha polls was announced by the Electoral Commission.

Supreme Court stands by its verdict on commuting death sentence due to delay
New Delhi: The Supreme Court today dismissed the plea seeking review of its Center for January 21 which said the unexplained and disproportionate to decide clemency for convicts on death row is reason to delay the movement of his life sentence .
” We have gone through the petition and related documents and we find no merit . Consequently the rule ,” the court observed today.
While giving its verdict in January , the court had commuted the sentences of 15 death row prisoners and accepted that the continued detention of a prisoner awaiting execution amounts to cruel and violates the fundamental right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.
Later, the high court also commuted the death sentence of the three murderers of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Today’s decision is likely to result in the court reject the petition for review in the case of the Centre .

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF ) today said it has maintained its aircraft on standby to take part in search operations to locate the missing plane from Malaysia with 239 persons on board.
“We kept our aircraft on alert and as soon as we have a forward, we are ready to take off for search operations ,” said an FIA spokesman .
The search area of the IAF is likely to be the Strait of Malacca, near the islands of Andaman and Nicobar .
The IAF has its Dornier aircraft, along with Mi-17 helicopters deployed in the Island territory and if need be , the Navy can deploy the P- 8I and maritime surveillance aircraft Tu- 142.
Malaysia has requested assistance from India to track his plane disappeared since the government here began the process of appointment of the persons appointed to share information and take the matter forward.
The Malaysia Airlines Boeing -777 aircraft bound for Beijing , which had five Indians on board, disappeared over the South China Sea on Friday, an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur.
India has a tri – service military command in Andaman and Nicobar and the Navy and Air Force conducted regular patrols in the area.
Search and rescue had been mobilized since early Saturday have failed to find the airliner in the South China Sea and the authorities have expanded the search area in the Andaman Sea , the Malaysian authorities said.
The authorities have put up last known point of contact with the air traffic control in East Malaysia – roughly halfway between Kota Bharu and the southern tip of Vietnam, flying at 35,000 feet.

Mumbai: Arvind Kejriwal tour of Mumbai on public transport today left its main audience , the common man , stunned by the chaos.
Since I landed in the city this morning, the 45 – year-old has taken the public transport volunteers AAP, television crew and security personnel on their trail .
Aam Aadmi Party Mr Kejriwal he is parading through the constituencies where their candidates as Mayank Gandhi, Meera Sanyal and Medha Patkar opposed to national elections next month.
Although the trip by car and train were designed to strengthen the party representing the common man , who made things difficult for them in busy station Churchgate city , where people are each other pushing and metal detectors fell crowding of passengers and equipment media .

After his spectacular success in Delhi, the AAP hopes grab a decent share of the vote in urban centers around Mumbai in not only the election of Lok Sabha , but also the assembly polls to be held later this year
