“Actors today are hollow” – Sunny Deol

Sunny Deol has survived despite the changing dynamics of showbiz. Filmfare discovers why he still wields muscle at the box-office
There are the Khans , Kumars and Kapoors on . And there is a Deol who has survived all competition – despite himself. Through the decades of their fan base remains strong , with his group of cheerleaders applaud all his films right from the gateway box office. The Great Saab Singh is the last testimony of his invincible power – as dhai kilo ka Haath owned in the acclaimed Damini decades ago. Having garnered decent business in cities, Singh Saab … has managed a large number in the territory of origin Northern actor . And Sunny Deol could not be in a sunnier mood for that. He called Filmfare Sunny Super Sound, his office in Juhu where it is caught gorging on cake and samosas . They just celebrated the birthday of one of its staff members . He reveals that stains loves people face with cream . In fact, he orders a cake increasingly , only to stain the face of the birthday boy ! Behind muscle flexing Deol is a child whose smooth muscle is his heart. A talk with the Deol who lives and does act to live …
Q. In the recent Singh Saab The Great, you once again performed action…
Whether it’s action, comedy or romance, we just do our job. Seeking that character within myself. The human mind is an encyclopedia. Until you internalize something, I can not perform. Many people will come and say, “Sunnyji, we continue the positive things in his movies.” It makes me feel good.
Q. Action is risky business. What kind of precautions do you take?
We are aware of security today. Earlier, during the 80s and 90s, we had no airbags, there would be chaos during filming with the animals and we would be injured. When buildings skipped mattresses were only kept in the soil. Now we have cable and air bags and landed gently on them.
Q. Does your family advise you not to take such risks?
Course. They do not want me to do stunts. But that’s my job. I’ve been in the sport. Stunts are also like sport. In Betaab I had to ride a horse. The horse was upset and none of our teachers could control action. I said, ‘Let me try. “I sat on the horse and luckily I did not fall. That was the beginning of my trip to the action. I hurt many times and later I faced back problems. I have had four surgeries. But nothing can stop me. God has given me strength.
Q. Do you grudge that the industry has typecast you in action roles?
Name an actor who has had success without being trapped in an image. But yes, I never had films like Love Mohalla Assi or before New Year. If I could make a film like Damini oriented woman, who could have made these movies too. Papa (Dharmendra) has made films of any other actor has tried. No other actor has played a variety of characters in hit movies like. The directors and the stories were so beautiful then. Unfortunately, today’s actors speak much but are actually hollow. They do not have as much talent as portrayed. The truly talented do not show off, his talent is speaking.
Q. Dharamji achieved a rare feat in Satyakam…
Yes, but, have you seen Phool Aur Patthar Papa? He began the era of action films. It’s a classic, but it ran for 100 weeks. Papa took his shirt off in the movie, but he was not showing. I was playing the character.
Q. Your most popular dialogue is ‘Dhai kilo ka haath’ in Damini. Any anecdote related to it that you’d like to share…
You can not predict that the dialogue has been grounded. If someone gives me a scene saying: “People are going to love it,” I do not want to do that scene. I like the unpredictable. Take for example Ghayal. Raj and I were discussing a particular scene. We had a press Eros show and after that we had a press conference. I was unsure about the reaction of the media and told Raj, “You do the talking.’m Not gonna be able to.” But the moment we walked in, the media people stood clapping. We could not understand why. That’s the fun – receiving unexpected applause!
Q. Do you get angry in real life too?
(Laughs) Yes, I do. It’s an emotion after all. When you are hurt, irritated or tired, then you naturally get angry. But it’s never without a reason.
Q. Any regrets about not getting your due?
None. Why live resentful and angry? Many don’t even achieve as much as I have. So appreciate that and move on.
Q. The Deols are supposed to be soft-hearted and simple. How have you managed to retain that?
We make mistakes and accept them. But we try not to deliberately hurt anyone. We laugh at ourselves. Our children have been brought up similarly.
Q. You seem to be in a mood to experiment with Mohalla Assi and I Love New Year…
I have always been open to experimenting. I did the action film Arjun unusual after trade Betaab. I Yateem and Dakait, which were more conventional. I have always worked with new people, and who have the passion and energy. Even when I’m 100 old movies, I’m going to have the same energy. I do not like looking at the monitor, I look into the eyes of the director. And that tells me if I have to try again.
