Little princess Alia Bhatt is all set to rule the marquee. We roll out the red carpet

Q. The hosannas you received for your performance in Highway are still going strong…

It feels good that people think about my performance. I am delighted that the film was loved. That’s important to me. I knew I was doing something different. Since my first year film student (SOTY) to it, which was a big change. I do not know if the change would be for good or for evil, but I took it as a challenge. I did not expect it would be so much praised. People tell me things that are absolutely beautiful. All credit goes to Imtiaz Ali. Highway happened because of him … My performance has passed it.
Q. For a 20-year-old, it was a difficult role to play.

I like to believe that age is just a number. If you are 20 or 40 or 60 … if connected with a certain emotion and dive into the character, anything can happen. I already had a sense of maturity. My character made me push even more.
Q. What were the difficulties you faced while shooting the film?

The film was emotionally draining. I had to invest a lot in myself and that’s a task. I tripped. I was mentally and emotionally exhausting. There was also physical difficulties. The places where we shot were rugged; I went through physical discomfort. But all these difficulties conducted only positive emotions. I never asked what he was doing or why he was there. I was happy.
Q. From SOTY to Highway, the journey has been extreme…

I felt comfortable in both scenarios. People wrote me after SOTY. They said it was just a pretty face and I could not act. The public also thought it would not be able to do more than look pretty and be a support in a movie. But I knew there would come a time when I broke it. However, I did not think it would come so soon. I have a hunger to act. I want to be a star and an actor. It is said that anyone can be a star or an actor … I want to be both. Many industry players are like that – stellar actors.
Q. Who according to you are the ‘star actors’ in the industry?

Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. They are stars but also great actors. They can do songs and dance and act convincingly too. Actually, most of our stars are fabulous actors.

Q. After so much critical acclaim, are you under pressure with regard to your upcoming films?

No, I did not take anything seriously. I gave a lot to the highway and appreciation that makes me happy. That’s it. I have given my all for my next film too. I’m not looking to beat my performance. I put a similar effort in all my films.
Q. Are you expecting to win awards this year?

I wanted to win a prize since I was a child. I like to practice my acceptance speech with a bottle of shampoo in the bathroom. But do not expect anything today. What if I do not anticipate and win a prize? I received everything I wanted from the highway. What comes next will be a blessing.

Q. You and Parineeti are said to be the new BFF’s in town…

I would not use “best friend” the term for our friendship. No need to talk much or meet often because we are very busy. I’m in love with her. It’s always fun to meet her. She is genuine and I am real too. Because of our schedules, we did not hang out and relax together though.
Q. Suddenly there are a lot of women-centric films being made. What do you feel about that?

It’s fabulous. I absolutely loved Kahaani. This year there’s Highway, Gulaab Gang and Queen already. It’s a good time at the movies. Also, the fact that people like these movies is a major boost.

Q. Will you do a big-budget film even if you don’t have much of a role in it?
I strongly believe the length of the role doesn’t matter. Having said that, I will not do a role if I don’t like it. It has to be challenging. I want to be as versatile as possible.
