Asia Cup 2014 : Shikhar Dhawan ends as best batsman of India, but far from the best of Asia
Shikhar Dhawan Indian opener slammed a 78 – ball 60 against Afghanistan on Wednesday to complete Asian Cup as the highest run – getter team ( 192 at an average of 48). It was his second fifty in the tournament – one in which India has failed to make an impact .
Dhawan performance in the tournament was even better than stand-in skipper Virat Kohli (189 runs three rounds ) while the No. 3 batsman has a better average of 63 . What is worrying , however , is that these pale in comparison with the stellar performances of drummers in the competing teams numbers.
At the end of the 8 – wicket victory against India Afghanistan, Sri Lanka Kumar Sangakkara was the top scorer with 246 runs at an average of 82. His team will play Pakistan in the final on March 8 – a side that can also boast batsmen with huge scores. In the global list of most run -getters , Ahmed Shehzad (223 at an average of 55.75 ) and Umar Akmal (194 at an average of 97 ) were placed second and third respectively .
With a game left, Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (191 at an average of 95.50 ) can hope to reverse Dhawan who is currently the fourth highest run – getter in the tournament. ( More stats for the Asian Cup )
Other big names of Indian stick line-up failed to impress completely with opener Rohit Sharma finishing Asian Cup with 108 runs at an average of 36. Indeed, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar India should India to make changes against Afghanistan and playing players out of the game instead of non- artists. It should not be , as the only experiment with Kohli was drummed into the batting order – promoting Rahane to open sleeves and play Rohit Sharma 3.
