
Lahore : Pakistan on Wednesday named former captain Rashid Latif test as chief selector and was responsible for assisting in the fight against corruption.
The outspoken 45 -year-old is known for taking a stand against match-fixing , which has plagued Pakistan cricket over the years . ” Latif accepted the offer to become the chief selector from 1 April 2014 , ” said a Pakistan Cricket Board ( PCB) release.
The position was left vacant after the appointment of another former captain, Aamir Sohail, has been canceled by the new president Najam Sethi PCB earlier this month .
Sohail was appointed chief coach and director of game development Zaka Ashraf , who was replaced as chairman of the PAC , Feb. 10 . The PCB said Latif also help provide training and conferences on issues of fight against corruption.
Latif said he was excited by the challenge. ” I’ll try to build a strong team , taking into account the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015,” he said in the statement.
“I will also help PCBs in every possible way in the fight against corruption ,” said Latif, who blew the whistle on famous teammates in 1994.
His position has forced the government to open an investigation into match-fixing , which led to a life ban for former captain Salim Malik and fines for Wasim Akram , Waqar Younis , Mushtaq Ahmed, Inzamam – ul Haq and Saeed Anwar .
Chairman PCB Sethi welcomed the appointment of Latif . “I have closely followed his frank opinions on cricket in the past and I hope he will be able to make positive changes in our cricket, ” said Sethi .
Latif has played 37 Tests and 166 one-day internationals for Pakistan as a wicketkeeper – batsman .
