Jagdalpur : Interior Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh today paid tribute to 11 CRPF jawans who were among 16 people killed in a Naxal ambush in Jagdalpur yesterday.
Speaking to reporters after the payment of tribute , Mr Shinde vowed revenge for the attack.
Here are the 10 ADVANCES IN HISTORY:
“So many jawans have been killed in the attack, we retaliate … the central and state forces are working together on it,” Mr Shinde said , adding that the National Investigation Agency to investigate the attack. Interior Minister also added that contrary to reports , there was no contribution of specific information about the attack.
With the general elections around the corner, the Centre has decided to send additional forces to the state , which votes on April 10 and 17 .
On Tuesday morning , 70 to 100 well-armed Naxalites ambushed a 50 – member of the joint assembly of the Central Reserve Police Force ( CRPF ) and state police team , resulting in a three-hour firefight . 15 jawans and a civilian were killed.
Reports say that the CRPF in the area had not changed his routine patrol and had fallen into a predictable pattern and allowed the Naxalite movement to monitor and evaluate the strength of the patrol.
The joint police team was protecting a road construction crew in the Valley Jeeram , a deeply wooded and remote region , about 400 km from state capital Raipur.
Home Ministry sources in New Delhi told NDTV that security staff , very surprised and outnumbered by the Naxalites , fought hard , but they ran out of ammunition.
The attack took place near the site where 26 people, including several prominent congressional leaders were massacred by Naxalites ten months. This was the first major attack in the area since then.
Prime Minister Raman Singh of Chhattisgarh BJP cut short a visit to Delhi and was quick to Jagdalpur . ” Maoism is not only the problem of Chhattisgarh, but the whole country ,” he said . Congress leader Ajit Jogi State has accused the government of Raman Singh of mishandling the Naxal problem in the state.
Tuesday’s attack is being seen as demonstrating once again the ability of the Naxalites to strike at a time and place of their choosing .
A review of standard operating procedures and the distribution pattern in the state, considered a Maoist stronghold , is expected to continue but questions about the frequent lapses of security forces continue to harass the government.
