Supreme Court stands by its verdict on commuting death sentence due to delay
New Delhi: The Supreme Court today dismissed the plea seeking review of its Center for January 21 which said the unexplained and disproportionate to decide clemency for convicts on death row is reason to delay the movement of his life sentence .
” We have gone through the petition and related documents and we find no merit . Consequently the rule ,” the court observed today.
While giving its verdict in January , the court had commuted the sentences of 15 death row prisoners and accepted that the continued detention of a prisoner awaiting execution amounts to cruel and violates the fundamental right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.
Later, the high court also commuted the death sentence of the three murderers of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Today’s decision is likely to result in the court reject the petition for review in the case of the Centre .
